As you know, we are living in a winter wonderland right now. Snow has been on the ground since Tuesday and more came down today. We already had a foot, and I think gained another couple inches. The weathermen missed this one, though. According to them, the snow was supposed to be outta here by noon. Ha! It snowed until about 6 pm. While it is pretty to look at; it isn't so pretty that I want it to stick around. The other bad part is the temperature. The wind chills around here have been in the negatives or just a couple degrees above zero, and for three days Keller has been looking out the window saying "Nosh ow-side" (snow outside)and he didn't understand why he couldn't go out and play.Today it was "warm" enough for Keller to actually get out and play in it.
He didn't know what to think at first and so spent some time just walking around, checking things out.
It was snowing so hard and it was so pretty, so I taught him to catch the snowflakes in his mittens.Jed showed Keller how to lay down in the snow and roll around in it. Clearly, he didn't know that he thought about that idea at first.
But then he sat up and realized that, just like dirt, he could smash and clap and squish the snow everywhere!
It is truly a snow-covered wilderness out there. You can't even see where yards end and the road begins. Jed started having a snowball fight with the boy down the street and Keller took off after him, wanting to get in on the action.
Realizing that he wasn't quite ready for a snowball fight yet, Keller decided to try out a new obstacle. A snow "mountain". The drift in our neighbor's yard across the street is about three feet high and Keller decided to try to climb to the summit of it.
It was a harrowing journey as the snow reached to his knees; he fell several times and even lost his boot once in the deep snow, but he reached the top. He didn't stay long enough for me to get a picture of him buried waist deep in the snow, but I don't blame him. I wouldn't hang out there either.
He next discovery was when I showed him that snow is yummy! So he continued to eat snow until it was time to go inside. He just sucked it right off his mittens.
Since he developed such a taste for the fresh fallen white stuff I thought I would just collect some and make snow cream tonight. So I took out a bowl and a couple of ladles and though Keller would help me scoop some snow for us to eat.
Wrong! He scooped it out of the bowl and ate it out of his spoon!
So, that was Keller's first experience playing in the snow. Tomorrow is supposed to be much warmer, even above freezing! I hope we get to go out and play some more. Who knows what he'll do trying to build a snowman!
